What inspired you to start your work?
Every day I feel blessed to be alive. After a truly beautiful and inspiring trip to London and Paris in 2015, I suffered a life threatening medical event on the flight back home to NZ. Surviving this brought me a renewed perspective on life, and an openness to everything it brings.
My journey back to wellness was as much about healing my mind and spirit as it was my body. The symbols you see woven into every Wicken piece are at the heart of that. They’re my chance to send out into the world a powerful, yet beautiful piece of jewellery to help women uncover their own strength and beauty.
During my recovery, I turned to nature and crystals for healing. Wicken was born from this, and I started to design and research the pieces for the White Witch collection and several other collections to follow.
Describe your creative space, where you bring to life your work?
The Wicken studio definitely has a warmth and energy to it! It is where I create /draw my designs and display my work. There are mood boards covering the walls,Ivy on wooden desks, candles, fairy lights and amongst all of that are the finished pieces, shinning and ready to send out to customers.
There is always a bit of Fleetwood mac playing in the background as well!
What do you love most about your handmade business?
Everything! I love being able to create. I love that I’ve been able to take my initial creative inspiration and step by step see it turn into a business which is growing and flourishing. The reason I started Wicken was to help empower women and we see this energy come through with each customer. Having them tell me their story and seeing the emotion behind buying them piece is very humbling.
What are you most looking forward to about being at the Auckland Fair?
The Auckland fair is very exciting for us as it is a high quality event which will be great exposure for our brand and will be a fantastic opportunity to meet with new customers.
What has been your biggest triumph to date?
Wickens biggest triumph to date was the week we spent in April at the Ponsonby Central pop up store. We had a lot of fantastic feedback on our brand and had great sales to some very inspiring customers. We also made some really exciting connections for the future development of Wicken!
