What inspired you to start your work?
I’ve always felt a connection to flowers. I adored them as a child and eventually it became very clear that floristry was the path for me. Having completed my Bachelors degree in Visual Arts, specialising in painting, I had also naturally steered towards flowers as my subject matter. Now, as Print and Petal, I channel my love of all things floral into printed/painted media, silk flower creations, dried and pressed flowers, and of course fresh blooms.
Describe your creative space, where you bring to life your work?
I currently work from home, in a small studio in Mangere Bridge, bursting to the seams with natural sunlight (an absolute must). My main work as Print and Petal is as a wedding and event florist. Because of this the majority of my work is created on site at some of the North Islands most beautiful venues. That way I can spend my time painting and making in my little loft to create my lovely giftware.
What do you love most about your handmade business?
I love being able to work for myself. I’ve worked for some of Auckland’s top florists and as lucky as I’ve been to have those experiences, as a creative soul it’s invaluable to be able to call the shots. I also love knowing that I have the freedom to control my time. I’m able to be there for those who need me; whether they’re clients or family. I also feel a deep need to be surrounded by beautiful things. I’m able to reach that level of joy through being self employed.
What are you most looking forward to about being at the Auckland Fair?
I’m so looking forward to pushing myself. This will be the biggest market I’ve ever done and I can’t wait to learn from it. There’s definitely a bit of fear present when i consider the enormity of the event but I’m so excited to just soak in the atmosphere of the day.
What would be some advice you would offer to anyone wanting to start their own handmade business?
My biggest triumph has been being able to quit my job and focus on this full time. Not many people get to say that they are living their dream. To simply know that I’m going to wake up each morning and directly steer the course of my life to where I want to go is amazing.
